Turnitin
Students will be using www.turnitin.com throughout the school year. Any student who does not have an account should access the site by clicking on the button below; he or she must also obtain a class ID number and password from me in order to enroll in my class. Many teachers use this website to ensure that students have not plagiarized a paper or project. However, the site also enables students to anonymously peer edit, maintain an online portfolio, and discuss topics on a discussion board that mimics the type of online conversations they will be partaking in as college students. I have found this site to benefit the students greatly and would be happy to answer any questions you have regarding this requirement. Remember, this also means parents may ask their student(s) to pull up a graded paper and review my comments together so they can discuss why the student(s) obtained a certain grade.

Below is an interesting article from The Atlantic Monthly regarding why plagiarism, even when not committed on purpose, is not a minor offense. When these mistakes are not addressed and students are not presented with consequences, we may be indirectly sending the wrong message, which can affect students for the rest of their lives.
